HOW UVC DISINFECTION WORKS

UVC light has been used for reliable disinfection in industrial applications for decades. Understanding how it works is the first step towards designing systems that deliver consistent, measurable performance.

UVC AS PART OF THE LIGHT SPECTRUM

Ultraviolet light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and is divided into three wavelength ranges: UVA, UVB and UVC. The UVC range has the strongest germicidal effect, making it the preferred choice for industrial disinfection applications.

UVEMI equipment uses low-pressure mercury lamps with a peak emission at 254 nm. At this wavelength, UVC is most effective at damaging the genetic material of microorganisms while maintaining high energy efficiency and long lamp life.

THE EFFECT OF DISINFECTION

UVC light penetrates the cell of a microorganism and damages its DNA or RNA. This prevents bacteria, viruses, moulds and yeasts from reproducing. Without the ability to multiply, microorganisms become inactive and contamination can no longer spread.

The lamp itself does not determine the disinfection result. The correct UVC dose must reach the target surface or airflow to achieve effective disinfection.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOSE AND RESULT

The disinfection result is determined by the UVC dose received by the microorganism. This dose is the result of two key factors:

  • UVC intensity
  • Exposure time

Different microorganisms require different doses to achieve the same reduction. Bacteria generally require a lower dose than moulds or fungal spores, which are naturally more resistant to UVC radiation.

Because every application is different, UVEMI equipment is designed to deliver a predictable and consistent UVC output that can be engineered around the required dose.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Industrial UVC systems must be designed with safety in mind. Direct exposure to UVC radiation can damage the eyes and skin, making proper shielding and safety measures essential.

UVEMI equipment is developed for safe integration into industrial machinery and production environments. Depending on the application, systems can be combined with safety features such as:

  • Protective shielding
  • Interlocks
  • Status and maintenance signalling
  • Application-specific safety measures

Correct engineering ensures that UVC light reaches only the intended target while maintaining a safe working environment.
